Hello Everyone,

There has been quite a bit of confusion around this Bon Jovi online voting (including in the Static camp!) but I think we’ve got it figured now.

It is a bit more involved than your typical voting, but we would appreciate any help you could give us as to open for Bon Jovi at Commonwealth Stadium would be a dream come true.

SO here is the short version of how to vote:

You have to click on judge as a fan and either register a new account, or you can sign up through Facebook.

Once signed up you are shown 4 songs and you have to rate them from best to worst. Our song Raise Your Voice will periodically pop up in these mini battles and at that point, we hope you would rate us as the best!

Also if you click on the artist tab you will see an alphabetical list of artists. When you find Static in the Stars please select us as your favorite and that will increase our entries into the battles. Sometimes we haven’t been showing up in the artist list, but if you don’t see us please try and refresh or try again later.

I know it’s a bit involved, but the fan who judges the most and is determined the “Best Predictor” will actually win tickets to the show as well!

To make this even more confusing, there are 3 rounds as well:

Regular Judging: April 1, 2010 – April 23, 2010 – Top 20 move on.
Quarter Finals: April 24, 2010 – April 27, 2010 – Top 10 move on.
Semi Finals: April 28, 2010 -April 30 2010 – The top band is determined – but that doesn’t mean they are the winner. It then goes to a judging panel. Confused yet?

The winner will be announced on or around May 7, 2010.

Sometimes when I look at the Canadian music scene my soul dies a little. There’s a lot that us Canadians have to be proud of – the Rocky Mountains, a world renowned reputation for being nice, poutine...we’re even credited with the invention of insulin. But when it comes to music we seem to come up against a looming and insurmountable wall of pop rock. With the exception of an elite group of musicians and bands, including Rush and Leonard Cohen, we have become known merely as mass producers of generic trash. Celine, Avril, Shania, Corey Hart, A Simple Plan, Michael Buble – the list seems like a bottomless pit of manufactured music that sounds about as interesting as cardboard with a side of styrophome would taste.

Imagine my relief, my surprise, my elation when I came across the newly released “No Grace in Goodbyes” put out by Canadian rock n’ rollers Static in the Stars. The entire album is packed with paradoxes of the best kind. The vocal stylings of front man Jordan Carrier are innately rough, yet melodic. The guitar riffs, hard driven and addictive, refuse to be pretentious or mechanical. Rhythmically the record is polished and professional, but in absolutely no way can it be classified as mundane or monotonous.

Adding to my surprise is the lyrical content – both inspiring and emotive. Cliches are an easy trap for any rock band to fall into…it seems that most bands are practically dying to jump onto the “Crazy Bitch” band wagon - songs based solely on the hedonstic life of the stereotypical rock star.

Admittedly, Static in the Stars frequently touch on these subjects, but the context, the content and the quality push the band into a much higher calibre of lyrical composition. Even a seemingly surface song such as “Lost Vegas” presents a much deeper paradigm involving impulsive actions versus potentially difficult consequences. But their intelligent song writing doesn’t stop with parents worrying about their teenage daughters. The track “One Step at a Time,” though energetic, is utterly heartbreaking as it tells the story of a woman defeated by her own insecurities which ultimately culminate into a cycle of self-destruction. The track is powerful and moving, especially so for women who have experienced any amount of abuse or self-loathing, consentual or otherwise.

Static in the Stars has developed a sound and a style that is not only unique, but it gives us Canadians something to be proud of. Their music is open and melodic, their lyrics clever and thoughtful. Although the album itself is short, I would not predict the same to be true for the career of this talented and fiery group.

Overview

On Thursday October 22, 2009 Flames Central will host an evening celebrating some of the best in Calgary music and film. A joint release party will mark the release of local rock band Static in the Stars’ new EP No Grace in Goodbyes and the inaugural North American screening of the new short film The Service. Local rockers Pure City and legendary 80’s cover band Broken Toyz will join in the festivities. This event will bring together some of the stars in the Calgary film and music scenes and showcase Calgary as a world class entertainment city, all in the premiere entertainment venue.

The Service Thomas Highe (Kent Speakman), is the kind of guy every woman dreams about. But, when he gets dumped by his shrewd wife (Paulina Chmielecka), a mysterious ‘Service’ offers to have her eliminated. After he mistakenly agrees, it’s a race to stop them before it’s too late.

Starring Kent Speakman, Paulina Chmielecka, Tye Evans, and Alison Wandzura, “The Service” was produced by Scott Carpenter, directed by Dave Barton, and written by Peter Skagen. Shot on location in Calgary for $400, “The Service” is exceptionally high in production value, and features an original score by PJ Serediuk, and CG effects by Darren Northcott. The film was shot during evenings and weekends, entirely by Alberta actors, and crew.

Static in the Stars

Static in the Stars is a five-piece rock and roll band based out of Calgary, AB. Combining 80's cock rock with modern influences like Anberlin and the Foo Fighters they have created a new brand of straight ahead rock and roll that sets no boundaries and takes no prisoners. The band has one goal and that is to deliver rock and roll back to the masses.

In the past year Static in the Stars have drastically increased their profile. They shared the stage with acts such as Pearl Jam, Wintersleep, K-OS and Billy Talent at Virgin Festival Alberta 2009. Just a reminder that tomorrow night we will be playing the Rusty Cage South (ex Studio 82) with our friends Pure City and Silent Panic. We have a few surprises up our sleeves in regards to our stage show for this night.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Static in the Stars will be playing VIRGIN FESTIVAL in Calgary on Saturday August 8th at 2:45-3:15 PM. The headliner that night is none other than the legendary PEARL JAM!!!!

Static will also be playing Indie Music Week in Toronto in October. And the CD Release party is set for Saturday, September 12th at the brand new club FLUID. It will be their sneak a peek before the grand opening.

Lost Vegas, the first single off of the new album by Static in the Stars hits radio across Western Canada on Monday July 20, 2009. The first single off Static in the Stars’ new album “No Grace in Goodbyes” is a pure blast of rock and roll. Mixing 80’s hair rock tendencies with modern rock sounds, “Lost Vegas” is rock and roll for the new generation. Produced by Tommy Mac from Hedley and Engineered and Mixed by Juno nominated Dean Maher, the single jumps from the speakers with an urgency that dares the listener to commit. The song tells the classic story of good girl gone bad against the backdrop of the decadence and debauchery of Las Vegas. Album Art Released!

Hello Everyone,

The launch of the new Static in the Stars EP is but a short time away, and in addition to the two free downloads already available, we would like to share with you the cover art! The art was photographed and designed by our favorite photographer Peter Marlin The two beautiful models are Elise Miles and Amy Kittilsen.

We will have the official release date in the next couple of days, so stay tuned! Also just announced on Thursday, August 13th we will be playing the Rusty Cage South with Silent Panic, so be there as we unveil our all new live show!

Well hello everyone,

Welcome to the official Static in the Stars blog. It has been a roller coaster ride in the last year for the Static crew. From playing Junofest and winning the semi-finals of the Fuel 90.3 Big Rock Star competition, to recording an album produced by Tommy Mac from Hedley and recorded by Juno nominated engineer Dean Maher, to lineup changes.

Yes that is correct... line up changes. Joe McLeod and Harvey J. Warren have decided to focus on family and other interests. This doesn't mean Static is done, and both will be involved with Static in the future. It just means we get to introduce new people into the Static family. We are currently auditioning new members and will let everyone know what's next.
